Name: Anna La Grassa
I live: Sydney
Hi! My name is Anna, and I live in Sydney. I'm a passionate 25 yr old who believes in young people being encouraged to want, invent and create positive futures.

I'm involved with my local youth council as a mentor, and have been on the committee in various roles for over 6 yrs, representing young people in the area and organising events and activities for them to get involved in. I have a Diploma of Community Services (Youth Work) which I attained in 2005.

I work for The FRANK Team, who provide creative education solutions that inspire and empower people to make their career, business and community goals a reality. Their authentic, fun and innovative skills training, guest speakers and resources are especially designed for young people and corporates. My role there includes project management of our workshops and programs, editor of IGNITE newsletter and facilitating youth workshops.

In 2006 I was on the ActNow Incubator Program helping to develop the parts of the website and content, I had a blast!

In 2007 I initiated ‘Community Threads’ a beading/ jewellery making workshop which created a fun community atmosphere while raising fund and awareness for the I-India Project. It was a blast and we are looking at holding future events...so get in touch if you would like to be involved!

On Australia Day 2008 I was acknowledged by my local council and given an Award for Services to Young People :)

Some of my interests are jewellery making, reading, spending time with friends and family and my gorgeous kitty :)

I belong with people who make me feel like I have something valuable to contribute and who allow me to participate. That's why I love being involved with my local council!

Inequality gets me going - especially when it is happening to people who can't speak for themselves or better their own situation. I feel like I need to act in situations where there is a lack of direction and someone needs to step to the plate to get people motivated, focused and productive.

If I care about something, I usually discuss it with a close friend to gauge their opinion and get some advice. This will usually confirm for me whether its something I want to act on or just a heat of the moment decision! So then depending on the issue, I might do some research or contact people I know who can help me or who I know are passionate about the same thing; I find it heaps easier to work with a team so that I feel more supported.

I guess my vision for Australia is that more people of all ages, races, religions, whoever they are, can actively contribute to a community as I think this could help to overcome issues like discrimination, access, ignorance, inequality etc… And so right now my focus is on getting young people involved in that process and helping them to see they can be a part of the decisions made that affect them.

I recommend reading the Dr. Suess book - Oh the Places You‘ll Go! … it's a fun look at the ups and downs in life in true Dr Suess style!
