Di Winkler is an Occupational Therapist who has worked with people with severe brain injury for more than fifteen years. Di is currently completing a PhD at Monash University which involves a series of studies focusing on younger people in nursing homes. In January 2006 Di founded the Summer Foundation. The Summer Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation that focuses on the issue of younger people living in nursing homes. The foundation conducts practical research to inform disability policy and seeks to provide workable solutions to improve the health and well-being of people with disabilities and complex care needs. The Summer Foundation aims to resolve the issue of young people in nursing homes. We utilise a range of strategies to influence health, housing and disability services policy and practice related to this target group including: research, raising awareness, empowering people with a disability, Informing and connecting families and collaborating with and organizing stakeholders. The Summer Foundation Ltd is not able to implement all of these strategies in isolation. We collaborate with other organisations, government, people with disabilities and their families to achieve this aim. Building Better LivesĀ® is a collaborative state-wide initiative led by the Summer Foundation to raise community awareness and capital with the express aim of resolving the issue of young people living in nursing homes. The organisations who are partners in the Building Better LivesĀ® initiative include: Melbourne City Mission, Karingal, ARC Support, Multiple Sclerosis Limited, BrainLink, Villa Maria, Wesley Mission, Huntington's Victoria, the James Macready-Bryan Foundation and Inability Possability.
