Meeting With MLP :) 17-03-2010 05:10

Just got back from a teleconference between Lynne Walker (MLP for Nhulunbuy), Megan Williams (Senior Young Carers Advisor), Erin Cislowski (Young Carer Worker) and myslef. it was very productive! We spoke about many things such as;

-Youth Week Celebrations in Nhulunbuy and what we were going to give away to people who were interested in Young Carers or know of young carers. Meg is going to bring over Young Carer packs and novelty items such as shoelaces and wrist bands to give away to participants.

-How to spend the $500 budget. We decided that, depending on how much Carers NT is willing to contribute, we would spend $200 on Meg's plane trip to Nhulunbuy and the other $300 on two digital flip cameras. We are intending to use the cameras to video Youth Week celebrations and see what the general public think a Young Carer is.

-We also spoke about organising an after school care for kids with special needs. The holidays coming up would be an ideal time for care but due to the lack of facilities, staff and funding, we are unable to do so but hopefully there will be an option for care in the 4 week holidays :)

All in all, it was a very successful meeting and Lynne has said she will contribute $300 towards the cameras, meg coming over as well as the free bee's. There is also money available in the Young Carers bucket from anglicare so it is all looking up :)

Latest Update 09-03-2010 07:09

i have recently organised for Meghan Williams, the young carers representative, to have a teleconference with me and the local Young carers co-ordinator in order to discuss what needs to be done between now and Youth Week. we are hoping to have a stall in the local youth week celebrations and the $500 budget will hopfully stretch to buy some give-aways :)

A meeting is also being organised between Meg, the local member and i in order to discuss what needs to be done in regard to the local young carers.

all is looking up and i hope to have succeeded something by the time i talk next :)

what to do with the $500 budget? 24-02-2010 09:09

Meghan Williams, the Carers NT, Young Carers rep and i decided that the best way to spend the $500 would be for part of it going toward a plane ticket for meg to come to my home town of Nhulunbuy and raise awareness of YC in Youth Week (8-14 April). The rest of the budget will go toward YC information packs that will be given to the three local schools as well as a gift that goes towards local YC's, such as a Wii game that will allow us to do something else on the rare occasion when we meet up.

Melbourne ANYCAT meeting :) 24-02-2010 09:02

during the ActNow workshop in melbourne i decided that rather than continuing on with my old action, which is currently underway, i would take a diffent approach and start afresh. My action this time is hopefully (fingers crossed) to organise a "young carer counsellor) who comes to the local high school, maybe, once a month and gives young carers someone specific to talk to. they may also help with the identification of young carers and talk to the teachers and other students about how to identify us as well as passing young carer packs to schools. In larger schools, a more permanent position as a YC counsellor may be possible but looking at the smaller picture, just passing on YC packs to counsellors who are already positioned at the schools would be a great start :)

Action Workshop Blog 15-12-2009 03:59

after completing an Actnow Workshop at Carers NT, Darwin headquarters, i decided that my action i would take would be to talk to the local minister in order to make an area where Young Carers could gain respite and gererally hang out. The Local Minister has a son with autism and has done a lot of work with Young Carers and myself in the past. my parents have already spoken to her about allocating an area where not only young carers could hang out but those we care for as well. I hope to have organised a meeting with her and start plans for allocating this area early into the New Year.
