Name: Erin Young
I live: Brunswick, Melbourne, Vic

I spend my days studying International Studies at the RMIT library in Melbourne, I attend the occasional hip-hop class and arrange outings/events that (i can be a be a little uncommitted) may or may not attend. I love watermelon in the summer and hot chocolate in the winter. Life without music would be boring and I hope to one day (when I grow up) to work towards inspiring others to achieve their potential. I have a strange but likeable obesession with China and if I could be any animal I would be a lady bug...to bring others good luck.

the incubator 28-10-2008 12:45

It has been a fantastic 11 weeks and I have really enjoyed being a part of and learning more about act now!

Being a part of the incubator program has shown me that young people are able to make a difference in our communities and it is passion that drives change. This program has been a fantastic way to share what young people are doing and also provide instruction for those like me who often loose track of where I was. I think this program also has shown me that an individual can make such a large impact on other peoples lives and we can contribute to our community.... and most importantly there are other people out there that are willingly to support and encourage you.

I am going to continue on with my action and now that i have nearly completed uni i am excited to go out into the world and test my ideas, build my knowledge, meet many new people and most importantly impact positively on other people.

Incubator has also provided me with the opportunity to learn about 11 fantastic individuals doing awesome things throughout Australia. Congratulations everyone and keep it going! Best of luck for your futures.

Thank you to sally as well, I have not even met you, but I feel this sense of positivity and energy come through on your emails and I know you will achieve great things...all the best for uni!

the internationlisation of body image 19-09-2008 03:05

so who is responsible for the creation of the thin ideal? is it the media? the celebrities? coco chanel? kate moss? the fashionistas?

i am currently completing my field study kind of like a mini thesis thing on the globalisation of beauty and how globalisation has impacted on the way women identify with their bodies anyway i came across this when i was researching....

Nelda, a 15 year old girl from San Andres, Belize told a woman that was completeing research on the island that she has learnt a weight loss method on a U.S television talk show. Nelda said that the method would help get her in 'good shape' and it was 'so easy.' 'it's called bulimia' she said 'the girls just put their finger in their mouth and throw up.' Nelda told her that 'you lose calories no matter what you already ate...and the girls were so pretty...an on TV...it's so easy'

Nelda thought it was just a diet...she didn't mean to cause herself any harm. It's amazing the power of television, imagery and how distorted messages can become across cultural divides.

MTV disgrace 05-09-2008 05:58

also it was pointed out to me that MTV are creating this new show called MODEL MAKER...

read the ad could it be any worse http://www.mtvmodelmaker.com/ are they trying to promote anorexia in women?

anyway i wrote them an email in response ...

To the producers, MTV and all those involved in the reality TV show ‘Model Makers,’

You cannot be serious? Another show to entrench the idea of skinny+beautiful=success and happiness in our young people. Don’t you think it is difficult enough to cope, on average we see 300 images a day, 9/10 of these relates to beauty. Body image issues plague the globe, with girls as young as 8 being admitted to hospital for anorexia nervosa, a group of grade six girls here in Melbourne admitted to starting an ‘after lunch vomit club’ in a bid to slim down for their formal and a girl aged 10 started a ‘raw fish diet’!

As girls we constantly worry about the way we appear, how fat or skinny we are…the media contributes heavily to this constant worrying and you believe that it is appropriate to capitalise on this? Are you insane? Majority of your viewers are young people, the most influential bunch on the planet…and you have decided to create a show to encourage the idea that thin is beautiful.

Why don’t you do a follow up show…five years from now, when your rolling in your millions, the effect your show will have on it’s participants…the eating disorders, the body image issues and finally the low self esteem that haunts their every thought.

Thanks MTV, for making me feel great about myself and giving me the opportunity to learn how to shed 80 pounds in 12 weeks….something I’ve always wanted to know in my quest for thinness.

Erin Young.

meeting 27-08-2008 03:02

well i had a long-awaited post-production meeting with my graphic desinger yesterday

we spoke for three hours, brainstorming, criticising and thinking of ways to advertise and sell the mag to our desired audience/sponsors

we have 5 schools at the moment subscribed to issue 2, just posted out 33 mags yesterday to schools within melbourne.

my original idea was to take the mag to rural students, becasue they dont have the facilities and support services such as those in the city...ive now come to realise that no matter where you are located you are affected by the same issues

acting 25-08-2008 07:34

i am the editor of real magazine, a mag written by young people for young women. it is designed to inspire, empower, promote positive body image and connect young women.

so we have just printed the second issue after a successful first issue. the first issue was funded by a government grant...the second issue was funded by libra and btli consulting.

so we are now beginning to sell the mag to schools, students and anyone that wants to read it really!

i love writing this magazine and i think that it is a fantastic way to connect young girls, give opportunity for them to share their stories, artwork, poems and ideas with each other!

i decided to write this mag because i want a mag that deals with real issues, about real people and inspires others to achieve their best.

check it out at www.realmagazine.net.au

and will keep you updated on all my progress!
