I live: In the inspire office
I want for young people to know that they are loved. I also want to commuicate to young people my deep-seat belief in their ability to do great things both for themselves and for their community. All our work at Inspire is about creating opportunities for young people to exercise that ability to do great things. I also have a big hairy audacious goal that come 2025 Inspire will be widely recognised for having made a substantial contribution to improving the mental health and well being of young people at a global level - there, I said it. I'm inspired by the people I work with, my family and some extraoardinary Tibetan Buddhist teachers I've had the immense good fortune to meet and learn from. In the early days of inspire, I came across a group of parents who all lost sons to suicide. They would meet once a month under the guidance of Rev Bill Crews to talk about their loss, the weather and just ordinary things they got up to. I had the privilege to sit in on this group for a couple of months. I will always remember one mother who said "When you are in the pits of your despair, the absolute depths of your grief you need to realise that simple things like hanging out the washing or even just going shopping can become Herculean acts." In that moment I realised that the world continues to spin because of the countless acts of generosity and heroism that go unnoticed. I laugh at myself (but not when anyone's looking).
