'Sex, drugs and rock'n'roll' (a MyNT Darwin Youth Health survey) 14-11-2009 04:27

As a young person I realise that we may sometimes see ourselves as invincible. But issues surrounding binge drinking, safe sex, and abuse affect us all. That is why the youth in Darwin need to have their health concerns voiced so that they can be active members in a coordinated solution to any lack of awareness and sympathy that may exist in their community.

A survey is not just a very effective research tool - it is an instrument for people to have their say and recognise that their thoughts and feelings about the issues are truely valued. The results of such a survey would then be used to create new material about the different concerns and solutions and give the young people of Darwin more and better avenues for awareness and dialouge.

But first we need to create the actual survey and work out the method for getting the best and widest distribution. We are meeting Monday to allocate roles to the action group that will head up this intiative. From there we will research different types of surveys and broad overarching health issues that effect youth as a whole. This will give us an idea of what questions to ask. Then we will research different forms of distribution (namely 'surveymonkey', as this will then independently collate the data for us) to determine which would be most effective for our needs. Equiped with this new information we will hold another meeting to brainstorm and write the final survey. Next we will get contacts for the youth groups and schools within Darwin so that we can begin distribution.

Then the real work can begin ...
