Name: Fricky
I live: In front of a laptop with a reliable internet connection

Life is a funny thing, full of triumphs and tribulations, and sometimes not in equal measure.

I am inspired every single day by the organisations and young people that aim to support young people, regardless of their location, race, religion or social status to advance themselves - not for political or partisan purposes, but simply because it is the right thing to do.

I am a simple guy - silly things make me laugh, headlines make me think, and conversations increase my awareness.  I just want to be able to look back on my life and say that I made a difference to society, not just in my city, my state, country but everywhere.

Social Networking: a new world or a new excuse? 27-05-2009 09:11

Well my first ever blog and I am going to get stuck into my fellow Machi-y-elians...

Cunning and conniving, we of the Y will be the first generation forever etched into the recesses of cyberspace forever and in real time - something that all of Generation Y has grasped with a ferocity not seen in terms of social change since Surfies realised what you could really do in the back of a panel van.

In my opinion change is a good thing, a great thing, and something that we should embrace equally as a society - take control of opportunities, create new life, love thy neighbour etc etc. But the issue is this - are we embracing change for good, or are we simply looking for another excuse, another reason to feel alright about our own ethical and moral individual failings as a part of a somewhat troubled society.

About a month ago I found this article on The Australian website  - basically it surmises that facebook is responsible for a drop in student marks through its general evilness and indeed its very existence.  It also states that there is a facebook grou specifically created so people can band together to sue facebook should they fail uni.  This group, in its obviously infinite wisdom, states that many academic studies and renowned academics deemed facebook to be a blight on our society and quite possibly the cause of all moral bankrupt since the time of Cleopatra.  A couple of points I would like to raise here:

POINT ONE:

What idiot came up with the idea of creating a group to sue facebook for wasting their time and then wasted time creating the group and recruiting people... ON FACEBOOK?

POINT TWO:

Why are our 'academics' studying the affects of facebook on their students instead of using their obviously superior IQ's to create more interactive methods of teaching their students therefore encouraging young people to learn whatever it is there meant to be learning and not poking an ex-girlfriend or throwing a sheep at some poor bastard from the 3rd grade?

In defence of the members of the above facebook group, most are probably in it for a laugh.  The whole thing could very well be a massive joke, but I would bet vital parts of my anatomy that there are several members of that group who actually believe they could get away with suing facebook because of their pathetic time management skills and obvious aversion to working as a means of living.

Therefore, using this far superior logic (as I never attended University), I would like to announce I will be suing Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane because he lead me to believe that a talking dog and a megalomaniac baby could indeed travel back in time to Nazi Germany and dance for Hitler; The Simpsons creator Matt Groening, because after watching the television show for the past 20 years I believed that I was weird for ageing and it has caused immense psychological scarring; and also the WWE, RAW, WWF and any other wrestling organisation internationally for even pretending what they do is not glorified ballet crossed with Tae-Bo and because I am just plain jealous of their immense strength.

The world of new media is an incredibly exciting one, and personally I believe the ability of sites like facebook, MySpace and Twitter to connect and inform people of all different backgrounds to be something that will define not only a generation but the 21st century.

But we must also take responsibility for our actions when we use such sites - as the rates of litigation continue to rise throughout the world and more and more lawsuits that would have once been deemed frivolous are now awarded phenomenal payouts, we have to realise that it is less a responsibility of our social network and instead the responsibility of the individual to take heed of their own actions, or inaction, for better or for worse.

Just like they did in the old days... before broadband.
