I work at Carers Australia managing the Young Carers Program.
A Young Carer is someone who spends time supporting a family member or friend with a disability, mental health issue, illness, or alcohol or other drug problem.
My mother-in-law has bipolar and sometimes I help out by visiting or phoning her, or when she is unwell, I visit her in hospital or do the shopping.
There is a Young Carers program in every state/territory in Australia for young people who:
- would like to meet other young carers
- need help managing school/work commitments
- want to take a break,
- are feeling sad or worried about their health or their family’s health; or
- would like more information about caring for a family member or friend
