I'm 19 years old, currently living in Canberra. I currently work at a preschool with children who have disabilities. Although I am not currently studying, I love to study and I want to study to become an Enrolled Nurse, from there a Registered Nurse, eventually medicine to become a doctor and eventually psychology, so I can be a psychiatrist.
I've struggled with bulimia nervosa and other eating disorders for 6 years now, and found finding treatment where I live (which is Australia's National Capital!) nearly impossible and completely insufficient.
At the moment I'm starting up at Charity in Canberra. We're calling ourselves EDFACT - Eating Disorders Foundation of the ACT. We hope to become an advisory body to the government in regards to Eating Disorder Treatment in the ACT, as well as offering support and advocacy to those with the illness, their families, friends and professionals supporting those through an Eating Disorder. I want to ACt NOW about this issue, because in Canberra all eating disorders have a mortality rate of approximately 20% - which means that 1 in 5 will die. There are 5 sufferers who are the main founders of our organization. Statistically one of us should be dead in the next 10 years. For a fully treatable mental illness this is not good enough.
My friends make me laugh and feel loved. Making a change is my driving passion and learning something new everyday makes me want to get out of bed. Kerry Graham, Melinda Tankad-Reist and Julie Gale are my inspirational role models.
