We know that any intern working with RUWDHI would have many unique and fulfilling experiences while providing very important aid to those who are in great need.

Where a Volunteer Can Work

The projects and goals of RUWDHI are very diverse and there is room for motivated and passionate interns of all backgrounds

There are opportunities for volunteers of all backgrounds with RUWDHI. We primarily place interns into the following types of internships, but we also have strong community contacts and are capable of combining the needs of the community and the experience areas and interest of the volunteer to put together a unique volunteer placement program.

    * Community Development Project

HEALTH SEMINARS AND TRAINING OF COMMUNITY HEALTH VOLUNTEER (CHV)

The intern will be part of our ongoing program in selected villages and communities that lack health care facilities and will help to train Community Health Volunteers (CHV) who will give first aid care to people in the communities and villages before they are taken to the hospital or clinic. Topics addressed in this program include:

-       First aid

-       Cholera

-       Diarrhea

-       Malaria

This placement will help interns to learn and develop their medical skills and have gain a better understanding of health care in the developing world

HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT VOLUNTEERS

Medical volunteers will be able to support our doctors and nurses in local hospitals and, based on the interests and academic background of the intern will be attached to a medical team. Some of the duties for an intern will be to record medical histories of patients, do consultations, observe and assist the medical team in ward rounds, OPD duties, assist with surgery in the operating theater, and public health outreach. Interns can also perform basic health care in the rural communities.

 HIV/AIDS VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers will assist in raising awareness of HIV/AIDS through talks and seminars at local schools and community meetings. Issues to be discussed by volunteers include the history of HIV/AIDS, the nature of the disease, modes of transmission, statistics, ways to prevent its spread, and symptoms of the disease. This is an especially appealing project for health educators who may also use their education to help spread information about good hygiene and disease prevention.  This knowledge will help strengthen communities throughout the Central Region of Ghana.

ENVIRONMENT AND SANITATION VOLUNTEERS

Interns will help in providing training and workshops on sustainable management of environmental resources and sanitation in local schools, community gatherings, churches and market places

The intern will also be given opportunities to create and organize public educational campaigns, with the assistance of environmentalists from RUWDHI.

EDUCATION

Interns can teach Math, Science, English, Social Studies and/or Art in our adopted local schools. Interns can also teach in the kindergarten, primary, junior and senior high schools. A large number of children in rural schools lack quality education as a result of teachers refusing posting to rural schools due to inadequate facilities in these schools.

Interns will prepare their lessons and mark their students' work. Many volunteers choose to help out in other areas too, such as taking students for extra-curricular activities like sports, drama or music lessons. Other teachers are available to help in preparing your lesson notes and to help you adapt to the local learning environment. There will also be a Teaching Guide book to assist you in your daily work with the children. Mostly you will be paired in class with a local teacher but in some circumstances you will have a class to yourself.

INFORMATION COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY

Interns will have the chance to teach Information Communication Technology (ICT) in our adopted primary, junior and senior high schools.

The intern will provide training in any of the following areas: computer basics, Windows, Internet Orientation, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Microsoft Power Point and more.

Sustainability of our programs is a priority and interns will also train the teachers so that they can continue teaching after the intern leaves.

Qualified personnel are available to train and assist the intern in this entire field before teaching begins.

Orphanage interns will be of great assistance to the house mothers, whom simply do not have enough time in the day. The children get the guidance they need to brighten their futures and you as a volunteer receive an unforgettable experience by truly making a difference in a child’s life.
