We are currently reviewing ActNow's Youth Participation and working out new and exciting ways to engage you guys so remember to scroll down to my blog for regular updates and to share your comments!

Who Am I?

I am the Program Coordinator for ActNow.  Before starting at ActNow I spent some time working for a grassroots, community organisation in Jamaica, an events company in the UK and in the Research Department at the University of Canberra.

I love to travel and have been all over North America, the U.K, Europre, Morocco, South East Asia and India.  It'd be cool to be able to one day say I've been to every continent!

I've also recently completed a degree in Indigenous Studies and Sociology from Sydney University.

What makes me want to act?

I believe in the inherent good in people and that the reason many young people aren't actively involved in social issues isn't a result of apathy, but rather a lack of education surronding issues that may be important to them. Which is why ActNow is go great!

Key Points So Far... 27-03-2008 10:01

Here are some of the major points that have come out of the working group so far...

  • young people are not disengaged as many people belonging to the older generation believe, they are simply employing new forms of engagement.
  • It is often the older generation that is becoming increasingly alienated from new forms of civic engagement.
  • Too many websites concerned with social change provide information and not interaction.
  • Rather than seeing mass apathy amongst the younger generations what we are actually seeing is a mass generational migration from old fashioned forms of social participation to newer, more creative forms.

Your thoughts????

Updates on our Youth Evaluation 19-03-2008 09:49

Hello Again!

We are still in the early stages of evaluating our youth participation and discovering new ways to make it better but things are moving along nicely!

ActNow's wonderful Action Partner, Ben Hanckel has joined our advisory team and we are lucky to have him on board.  (Thanks Ben!)

Since joining the Project Working Group I have been reading some really interesting literature on youth participation.  A common theme throughout seems to be that young people are seen as 'becoming' rather than 'being' (Collin, 2007) and thus are not taken seriuosly as decision makers, or responsible workers.

I find this quite an interesting idea and certainly something that I can relate to in my previous work experience. I am curious about your response to this idea-is it a barrier you have faced when trying to gain work/volunteer experience?

Hit me back with some comments guys-I would love to know your thoughts...
