About me:
Hi Guys! My name is Shane MacPherson from Bendigo in Victoria. I am currently studying Law / Arts at Latrobe University and am no where near finishing my degree. Thats because I lived in Indonesia for almost 4 years doing heeps of stuff there like a university course and other private courses (well, thats what I tell my parents anyway [shhh])... My mates call me IndoBoy coz they reckon I act more like an Indonesian than an Australian, and coz I like to talk about Indonesia alot. But thats cos I lived there more most of my teen years. Although I like to party hard, I have a serious side to me where I like to take action about issues I feel passionate about. I often write letters to the editor, make submissions to various committes, and send letters to Members of Parliament. Oh yeah, Im addicted to coffee (like most Uni students are)...
Why did I get involved in Act Now?
Because Act Now is the best starting point for anybody (young and old) passionate about making a change to this world. It is always difficult to find a place to start, so now there is one. It can direct us into the right direction, we can speak to other passionate members about our goals and experiences in making the change, and we can support each other.
What makes me want to act?
Because not everything is fair in this world we live in. There are so many social injustices, violent acts by those sworn to protect us, and so much economic disadvantage which the government doesnt seem to care about. If everybody could make even the slightest difference for one person, this world would be a much brighter place. And most of all, we only live once.If all we do is study, work, pay off a mortgage then die, what were we on earth for? I want to be remembered for not what I became, but for who I was and what I did when I had the chance to make a difference in the lives of other people less fortunate. Oh yeah, one last thing... I want create a better place for my children, grandchildren, and thier children.
What issues Im interested in:
One issue that has long been a passion of mine is to have Australias public dental care system improved (refurbished would be a more appropriate word). It not only severly effects welfare recipients who have to wait 3 years to get thier teeth looked at, but it is worse for the 'working poor' or underemployed because they dont qualify for public dental care and cant afford to see a private dentist. Some third world countries have better systems. And what makers me sick is that government has taken our money and given it to the rich so they can better enjoy the benefits of private dental care.
I am also passionate about human rights abuses like that of East Timor and now PNG. How a military can beat, rape and kill its own citizens defies belief. And the police for that matter arent thatt better.
Last but not least, I would like to act on poverty. In the 4 years I spent in Indonesia, I saw and experienced first hand the life and suffering of those who earn less than $1 a day. No human should have to edure that, especially by large American companies like America. We feed our pets on more than $1 per day, but thats all they pay in wages to people supporting whole families. How can they get out of poverty when they cant even send thier kids to school because they are forced to beg at red traffic lights!!
Word of the day:
There is no chance, no fate, no destiny that can circumvent, or hinder, or control a firm resolve of a determined soul.
