I'm a postgraduate researcher at the University of Western Australia. I'm looking at how activists are working to redefine science and technology so that it works along democratic principles and supports diversity. The case studies I'll be using include farmers' movements from India, the Swedish Pirate Party, and the Creative Commons movement.

For my research, I've spent several months in India talking to farmers, activists, bloggers, and independent film-makers. I've been to two World Social Forums, in Pakistan and Nairobi, which were huge and chaotic and very different from anything else I've experienced.

I believe deeply in thinking and engaging with the world around us, trying to make it better and more beautiful in small and large ways. It's important not to live your life by reverting to default choices - I want to open my eyes and choose for myself, and work towards the kind of world I want to live in.

Often, it seems like there are too many different issues to care about. Sometimes it's overwhelming. I try to take many small steps in the right direction, and a few big leaps when it seems there's an opening.
