52,747 divorces were granted in Australia in 2004, of these 49,260 involved children under the age of 18 (Australian Bureau of Statistics) often the effects of divorce on the children involved go unnoticed.
Divorce is a traumatic and stressful time for all involved, it is an emotional rollercoaster. I know this because I am a child of a divorce, along with so many others in Australia.
Personally, I don't think enough is being done to support children in this traumatic time. It's been 12 years since my parents divorced and it is only now i realise how much it has affected me. The way i communicate and interact with people, especially in close relationships.
I feel that support systems should be in place in school such as counselling after a family has split. It is a MASSIVE change to go through and often you are left feeling guilty and like you should honour one parent over the other, although most parents stress to you it's not the case.
