How many times have you heard someone say as we wlak past a homless person on the street, ' They dont need to live like that; they just dont wnat to work'. The first step in chaning the inequalities towards anyone different, is waking up the Australian people and showing them no we are not all treated the same, or are given the same oppurtunities. People may say that we are not creating inequalities the government and law does, such as youth allowance, pension and other payments. Inequalities can be seen from our citizenship rights. From citizenship selectivism occurs where certain benefits are only given to people in certain circumstances. Such an example includes Youth support payments from centrelink, only available to those who a from a low income family. But what of those Youths who are from high income families, who are not financially supported from home. These Youths are also students, and like low income Youths find it difficult to work a great deal aswell as study. Is selectivism really a great way to go to create eqaulity? Social citizenship rights state we can expect reasonable standards in education, but not all believe in those reasonable standards. An example of this is celebrating religious events such as Christmas. Because of certain relions and Belifes, some schools are critisized for letting the children colour in Christmas trees. This right to celebrate Christmas at schools, is a right for most but for some a sign of discrimination and inequality towards other beliefs. Cultural differences need to be taken into account when building rights, and how we respond to others. Citizenship entitlements for even Australian born, assume we are all capable of receiving paid work. Paid work opens the door to sick pay, superannuation, holiday pay and many other benefits. But what of those citizens who cannot work? Such as the Disabled. If they are without employment they can apply for the Disability support pension. This can be anywhere from $295.10 to $546.80 fortnightly. This limited amount of money limits financial equality, as most Australians are bringing similar or more amounts fome weekly.Even those who are able to work, where do they work when most workplaces offer limited access for those in wheelchairs etc. This creates inequality as we all have a freedom to choice, and this would include where we work, which obviously does not apply to those with a disability as it would be wherever they can get work which caters to them. Australia has introduced acts such as Human rights and Equal oppurtunity commision act 1986, and anti- discrimination acts 1977 to ease inequalities, but my action is to ease the inequalities individuals create. Such as not understanding that everyone does not have equal rights and oppurtunities, and maybe helping those or not passing judgemnt. Also my action is to provide names of organisations and websites that people can go to to offer help to others and maybe learn more.
