Kevin07 is Kevin Rudds new interactive website with links to MySpace, Facebook and YouTube. Seriously?

While I like Kevin Rudd (and will probably be voting for him, if only for the Julia Gillard factor), I think this new interactive site (complete with links to a MySpace, Facebook AND YouTube page!) is just a cheesy and somewhat condescending attempt to reach the younger generation.

Older generations are constantly complaining that my age group and below are uninformed, uninspired and immature - rather than pandering to the few of us that are like that, why not run an intelligent campaign? Dare the younger generation to care; to use their brain and intellect (however limited it may be) to vote not for the candidate with the prettiest MySpace, but to vote for the the candidate who is best to lead us. Not because they have awesome YouTube videos, but because they are genuinely the right person – or, at least, the lesser of two evils.

The majority of my generation is one of the least intelligent, selfish, uninformed, apathic generations there is - the only reason the majority of these people give a damn about Making Poverty History and climate change is because Beyonce told them too! While I agree that shows such as the Make Poverty History concerts raise awareness, do they really change anything? Have the kids who attended the climate change concerts altered anything they do in their daily lives to conserve our natural resources? I doubt it. Because it’s just a gimmick – it’s in their heads for about a week after the concert and then that’s it. It’s the same for Kevin07 – just a gimmick, and an offensive one at that.

It is constantly reported that numeracy and literacy rates among school children is at an all time low, and yet candidates are using childish means to attract younger voters! Lets try and raise the intelligence of this country – instead of marketing to the lowest common denominator, lets market to the highest; the most intelligent, informed, willing and able young adults. Challenge those who are apathetic to stand up, be informed and be counted for.

I am 22 years old, and I would love to see a prime ministerial campaign run on the merits and beliefs of the candidate, not how ‘hip’ and ‘cool’ they can pretend to be. There is a place for fun and frivolity in a campaign, but please – MySpace, Facebook, YouTube? The belief that this is the way to get through to the younger voters? It’s just insulting. While I applaud him for trying something “new”, albeit a copy the USA Presidential campaigns, to attract younger voters, I just wish that he had enough respect to the younger generation not to stereotype us into a bunch of illiterate (have you seen some of the MySpace messages? It’s called grammar and punctuation, people!) and internet crazed youths. The insinuation that this is the only way to catch the attention of young voters is insulting, at least to me.

By the way, at what point was it decided that someone who appears to be less than intelligent would make a great Prime Minister? How did the candidates get it in their minds that by acting like youths, pandering to youths, copying the things that youths do (all the while complaining about the fights they get into, their disrespectful behaviour, their less than impressive school results, their apathy etc), they would be running a successful campaign? What happened to impressiveness, intelligence and even compassion? What happened to candidates wanting the respect of the voters?

Perhaps our candidates should hire a few seasons of the West Wing or The American President – however fictional and Hollywood they may be, they portray truly impressive, distinguished and respected leaders. Just what this country needs.

on the slogan note,
the best way the words 'kevin' and 'seven' were used together was on the 7/7/07 in the opera house for the zeroseven concert. a few days after kevin announced if elected he would increase international aid 2 0.5% of GNI (they are wanting aid increased 2 0.7). he addressed 700ish make poverty history zeroseven ambassadors, who all chanted back

"no kevin, we want seven"

classic!
so, now that its his slogan & it didnt exist in july.....
maybe young people gave him an idea
just thinking

While the Labor party doesn’t blow me away, I think the website is nicely done. It’s clear, informative and fresh.

Kevin jumping on the myspace bandwagon is stretching it a little! It feels forced, like he’s trying too hard to be ‘hip and young’ (might make him look desperate). A net campaign on its own won’t cut it, he should also concentrate on policies which benefit young people.

Still, using the web to appeal to us isn’t a bad thing. We’re the ‘internet generation’, it’s what we relate to. Why not use it to gain support?

Loz-b, I agree it’s important to challenge people (instead of dumbing politics down). But I don’t think it’s a good idea to only market to ‘the highest; the most intelligent…’ That’s too exclusive and would alienate many Australians.

And yeh funnelweb, voters are easily swayed. But better to be swayed by cheesy slogans than by policies which play on people’s anxieties and fear of change (Howard style – e.g. ‘children overboard’).

Haha Kevin07 is the funniest thing i've ever seen! I was in martin place and these stooges were walkign around shoving bumper stickers, fridge magnets and Kevin07 mugs in peoples faces at 7.30am! They had a sausage sizzle and the works. Presidential campaign alright ! It's almost as cheesy as the election line "My name is Kevin, and I'm here to help!" Are voters stupid? Are they so easily swayed that money and a cool slogan will "buy" an election victory? It sure is a new way of running an election campaign in Australia. If you can, then why not? Kevin is trying to appeal to the "younger" voter - what better way than YouTube and a catchy Kevin07 sticker? Maybe they'll throw in a Kevin07 fragrance.

I'm going to go against the grain here. While the idea of Kevin 07 reeks of Americanisation... I would much rather have information on the policies of a party to look at if and when I feel like it, rather than have a letterbox full of glossy 'vote for me' pamphlets or cheesy phone messages. Once the election kicks off (officially) I think that this site will be a great source of info.

We all have minds of our own. But Keven 07 does not. Is this a mere futher Americanisation of our culture? Keven Rudd is a Phoney. At least John Howard belives in his own crap.

Keven and the Labour party are as equally out touch with society. The majority of the uninformed I know are middle aged adults and the only reason they throw away their preference vote is because they are unsure of which party actually going to better represent them.

The only clear differences between the two is that the Nationals and Liberals belive that IR policy is valid and Labour belives that that the new policy is not.

Every other topic is under a large grey section.

I want a leader who will actually stand up for something they belive in not what they have been dictated to by third parties.
