My action for the ActNow Incubator (ActNow's youth advisory board) consisted of utilising the internet to inform others of current happenings in the world of Australian politics, with a particular focus on equality in relationship rights, what youth can do and how they can be more involved.

My Action with ActNow:
My action was about promoting, in youth, a greater awareness of same sex rights(or lack thereof) in Australian society. I communicated this message using the internet, through a blog I created aimed at youth to convey this issue and about politics in general.
The long term focus of this website is to engage youth on political matters, how they can get involved and how they are affected by policy and policy change. I want everyone to know that they are part of the bigger picture, they are IMPACTED by politics and the decisions being made, and moreover, they are part of the process. This affects mine and your future: it should not be left in the hands of others without an input by us.
The Experience:
The experience has taught me a lot about myself and allowed me to investigate and learn about so many new things, it is exciting and engaging as it is a continual process of discovery.
I have learnt that when engaging in an action a big part of it is building and creating the framework and can be disappointing and demotivating when results are not at first apparent. I have learnt that it is important to remember that it does not happen over night and these things take time, however the process can be part of the fun of developing the action. I think it is good to find likeminded people and friends who can offer support and motivation when it does not seem worth it(because sometimes it gets overwhelming and the problem can seem so big, but as an individual you are a vital part of the process and the solution).
I have also had the opportunity, through taking my own initiative, to have some of the companies and people I am working with(and talking about) to clarify and provide helpful suggestions. I think that, although it may not be evident, help and assistance is out there and people have been more than happy to have a look at my blog(including organisations) and have provided positive feedback. I think the internet offers many opportunities for contacting people and finding out information, and I think that I have been greatly assisted by taking advantage of this.
Essentially I have created a starting point for something which I hope to be larger, but, for the present I hope to have influenced and stimulated debate around same sex relationships issues, and promote others to get involved and see what they can also do, themselves.
The Future:
As this is a long term project I had some issues that I plan on over coming into the future, these include:
Time management: this is essential in volunteering, knowing what is manageable for you so that you can contribute effectively and most productively. Sometimes I find myself time poor and have to be careful about how I allocate my own time. From here, though, the plan is too spread the “equality in politics, equality in life” message to the world so we can all live in a fair and just society.
