Doing Something About Kamikaze Bus Drivers

My quest to make my and others journies to work safer and less stressful...

My trip to work each morning is turning into a bit of Russian roulette with a decreasing standard of bus services in my local area, so I decided to take action by writing the letter below to the local bus service.

To Whom It May Concern

I am writing in regards to the declining standard of the Bus Service on the XXX Route.

I use this bus on a daily basis to get to work, as well as on weekends and have become increasingly concerned by the erratic driving of some drivers on this route and the re-occuring lateness of this bus, particularly on weekends.

Over the past six months I have witnessed

ð       A driver run two red lights in a row (one just before the railway line and another a few hundred metres down the road) narrowly missing a car
ð       A driver close the door while I was still boarding the bus, despite there being three passengers still waiting on the street to board the bus. On another occasion I witnessed a driver close the door on a woman’s arm. Despite her yelling, he did not stop to ask her if she was injured after she freed her arm.
ð       Drivers missing stops, despite the bell having been rung to indicate that passengers are waiting to disembark from the bus.

I also feel like service to travelers on this route would be greatly improved if the bus service was to run past 7.30pm each night and all day Sundays. For passengers living in Pascoe Vale South and Brunswick West, it is considerable walking distance to the nearest tram line (West Coburg or Airport West) when the bus is not operating or running late. With the winter months approaching, I’m sure travellers would appreciate the availability of a bus service.

I hope that these concerns can be addressed in order to improve the experience of traveling on this bus line.

Yours sincerely

I got a quick response, but I was a bit disappointed - the company didn't really committ to any improvements!

I'd love to hear if anyone's got any ideas for what I could do next.  Share your ideas by posting a comment below.

Hi Birdie,

It's a public bus, operated by a private company...ah privatisation! Anyway, since I wrote that letter the Victorian Transport Minister has announced a review of the bus routes in the area and there's an opportunity to make a written submission and attend a public meeting. I'm going to put my concerns in a formal submission and send it off to have them included in the review..wish me luck!

You don't specify whether you are dealing with public transport or a private bus company and there are some intrinsic defferences between the two but I guess the first thing to do is to follow up with another letter. Any future correspondence could include something like:

Please let me know what steps you currently undertake to ensure passenger safety.

The 'she'll be right' attitude abounds but I too feel it's my civic duty to comment on public transport (especially safety) issues. Middle management is almost non-existent so I often ring the transport info line to make complaints and compliments because that is the only way things will improve and also the only way those gems who do their job well will get credit where it's due.
