Kindergartens are an important community facility. They provide young children with knowledge and skills they will need for the rest of their lives.
One outdoor section of my son's kindergarten was blocked off because it was unsafe for children to play in. Their vegie patch was a useless pile of sandy loam and they couldn't really afford to mow the lawn.
So last week, because I'm President of the Parents' Committee, I organised a Working Bee.
We all showed up (thankfully people showed up!) dressed in our trackies, ready for action. Some mowed, some weeded, some raked. Some keen gardeners rescued the vegie patch and planted some strawberries. We started clearing the dangerous material from the blocked off garden section.
All in all, it was a huge success. We achieved what we set out to achieve, but only because so many parents put up their hands to help.
I know that in the grand scheme of things, our contribution to the world was very small. But our Working Bee is a good example of how when people work together they can achieve worthwhile goals.
