9 inspiring young carers from across the country participated in a workshop
held by Carers Australia in Melbourne last week. They came together to think about how they can make the world a better place for young carers and what that might look like.
Check out the Young Carers, their very supportive staff and
representatives from Amgen (who part sponsored the Young Carer meeting) here:

During the workshop Young Carers identified what was important to them.
Following this the group then did lots of moving around the room and identified heaps of the possible ways young people can take action (check out the video and pictures below):

Once they had identified heaps of the possible ways they could take action they then identified all the great strengths, skills and interests that they had in the room. They all had some great skills and a diversity of interests that they can use for taking action - we put all these into a tree of knowledge - check it out:
Using all the great skills that they have and also thinking about all the actions they could take the young carers then came up with action plans to take back to their home states. They are going to start taking action on these over the next seven weeks!
The actions they are taking are going to help to increase awareness about young carers and young carer issues. Also they are going to help provide better access and support to other young carers in Australia.
They will share their experiences via regular blog updates and comment updates - reflecting on their visions for change and whether they have met their goals.
Send them your support and hear about how their actions are coming along by checking out:

Carers Australia has a program in each state and territory specifically to support young carers who:
· would like to meet other young carers
·need help managing school/work commitments
·want to take a break,
· are feeling sad or worried about their health or their family’s health; or
·would like more information about caring for a family member, relative or friend
Each of our carer associations run a variety of social activities and camps - an opportunity for young carers to have fun and take care of themselves. It’s a good way to meet other young people who understand what it’s like to be caring for a family member, relative or friend.
