The two actions that I undertook during the week were:
1) to write to both the government and opposition members of parliament responsible for overseas aid/development and ask them about the Australian Wheat Board scandal as well as express my concern about the direction of Australian aid dollars more generally; and
2) to express my concern over the possibility of Australia allowing the introduction of the Terminator seed.
Both of these actions were relatively quick and easy to fit into my everyday life. The first involved me writing up a few lines expressing my concern (I didn’t have a pilot letter) and then just sending the emails off. I explained that I was an Australian citizen concerned about the direction of our foreign aid. Naturally, I heard back from the Opposition and have yet to hear back from the government. Still, I think the action was worthwhile in terms of showing the opposition that this is an issue that people care about and also in terms of emphasising to the government that the AWB scandal was unacceptable.
The second action was really easy. For anyone who is seriously strapped for time this is the best possible thing that you can do to act. The letter is already written for you – you simply go to the website and sign your name. Of course, you can change the letter if you want to and thereby tailor it and put in our own personal touches… But if you’re busy, it’s a great way to say something about an issue without really having to take any time out of your normal activities.
