Most of the books are really cheap because they are printed by not for profit orgs – look online for the best deals.
The easy cheat is to get your friends to each read one book, then have a book-club afternoon where you share the best of what you’ve read while eating cake and savouries. It’s not a bad way to brainstorm new action plans either!
- Change the world for ten bucks – by the We Are What We Do Movement: This graphic novel combines images and ideas to inspire us to make little changes that will benefit the world and ourselves. It’s more of an inspiring resource than a detailed action guide. www.wearewhatwedo.org.au
- How Good Are You? – by Julian Lee: Solve problems in your own backyard. Lee teaches us how to sniff out bad practices in farming, energy production, and waste management, and how to change our lifestyles to avoid supporting them.

- 365 Ways to Change the World - by Michael Norton: One action for every day of the year! Norton covers a whole range of topics including the environment, your local community, politics and world issues. The best part is that you can do most of the activities from home, and they tend to be fun and creative. www.365act.com/ourbook.html
- The Everyday Activist – by Michael Norton: This one is a bit more hardcore, and outlines the steps from making your ideas work in the local community up to world recognition and winning Nobel Peace Prizes! There are plenty of plans to help you get your ideas and fundraising happening. www.365act.com/ourbook2.html
- Make Poverty History Book – by the Make Poverty History Movement: ‘How to help defeat world poverty in seven easy steps...buying the book is step one.’ Sold at Oxfam for only $4.95, this book offers a structure for action from ground level involvement to holding governments and corporations responsible for their actions. www.oxfamshop.org.au/products/81456/81472
- From Poverty to Power – Duncan Green: Based on Oxfam’s experience in hundreds of countries all over the world, Green shows us what actions we need to insist on taking as individuals and as states to promote an equal future. Get ready for some powerful reading. www.oxfamshop.org.au/products/81456/1777542
